In the past month, I've been busy reporting a story about housing affordability--where we're at now and where we will be in a couple of years (with starts continuing to plummet). In the talks about housing stock, one of the conversations that kept coming up was not how much housing stock we're gaining, but how much we're losing. Housing directors and affordable housing advocates in major cities, like New York, Washington, San Francisco, and Chicago all expressed concern that they could see a lot of older multifamily housing for low-income residents disappear.
